Mother Goose Favorites
Mother Goose is the best place to start building a verbal and musical vocabulary with your child. Here are some of my favorite publications:
Richard Scarry's Mother Goose
92 oversized pages filled with Richard Scarry's classic drawings and the best known rhymes.
Nursery Songs arranged by Joseph Moorat and illustrated by Paul Woodroffe, published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art
These illustrations, completed in 1907, look like they came from an illuminated medieval manuscript. The tune arrangements are lovely and often unusual.
The Mother Goose Songbook
Jacqueline Sinclair's charming illustrations complement the simple piano arrangements by Carol Barratt, which are suitable for beginning students. Guitar fingering chart included in back.
The Mother Goose Book by Alice and Martin Provensen
This is one of the most complete Mother Goose books I have found. The Provensens' illustrations are not only wonderful, they also integrate the text fully so that the pictures truly help explain the story. My favorite spread is on pages 8-9 - it is both a calendar and compass and incorporates many nursery rhymes.

Opera for Everyone
Are you intimidated by opera? Come on, be honest! Those new to opera and long-time fans alike will love Trollflojten, Ingmar Bergman's telling of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Although it is sung in Swedish, the subtitles, and more importantly, the actors' expressions, tell the story. The Scandinavian cast does a great job of singing, with some standout vocals by Papageno and the Queen of the Night. If you want more information, please see my complete review at Epinions.
